Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us. (1Jo 2:18-19 NKJ)
Perhaps the greatest Antichrists are those who take scripture out of context and make up these fantastic interpretations that sounds almost like a fable.
The first syllable of the word Antichrist comes from the Greek word ἀντί anti, nothing new there. But, it’s the meaning of the word that sheds some light. It means to be over against, opposite to, before or for, instead of, or in place of. Now, in John’s gospel, John opens by introducing Jesus as the eternal Word, the logos. So any potential antichrist could be against the Word of God, Jesus or the gospel message. I can think of several people that might qualify as Antichrist both historically and even now.
