The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live. (1 Tim 2:1)
Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?” And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals. (1Ki 18:17-18 NKJ)
Should we pray for the President, the presidency and our structure of government, Executive, Legislature and Judicial? Absolutely! It is an awesome responsibility, given by God to govern. Those in that position should be leading the country in a manner that is pleasing to God, so that ‘we the people’ can live our lives peaceably. That being said, there isn’t one single President, going back to Nixon, that has got everything right.
We have a responsibility also, and that responsibility is to speak against injustice and unrighteousness. God doesn’t create an oligarchy, that functions as a lone power. God has his people, the salt and light, to correct any imbalance that might exist. Silence is not an option, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” Wrong is wrong, and unless someone speaks against it, it will become the accepted norm.
